Genbaku Dome (Bomb Dome), Hiroshima

This shell of the Exhibition Hall is the only structure remaining from the detonation of the first atomic bomb in August 1945. Around it now is the Hiroshima Peace Park, a really beautiful memorial park dedicated to the city that was destroyed, the people who lost their lives and the ongoing campaign to rid the world of nuclear weaponry.
The building apparently was considered for demolition many times until it received heritage protection and it was decided to keep it as a stark reminder of what happened on that day.
It's extremely sobering to visit the park and see this hollow shell, there's no escaping from the reason behind it.
