Today, I had a great plan. We were going to drive across the state of South Dakota in one day, and make it to the Badlands and Mount Rushmore in time to see the evening ceremony. It was a near 6 hours..
So I grabbed my whistle and put on my Paul Herbert drill sergeant hat… and woke the troops EARLY…REALLY EARLY!! I then briefed them that there would be limited toilet breaks, stops and all meals would be within the walls of the great white van.
Surprisingly, the kids did an amazing job of getting ready and packing the car! We were on the road by 7:30!
Our first stop, yeah I know I said no stops, was the Corn Palace. I had to… Brooks and those roadside attractions! I have to give the people of Marshall some serious credit!! They have raked in the tourist dollars over the years with the weirdest of weird buildings
Next on the fun list… stopping at the most stunning rest stop, overlooking the Missouri River. WOW! It is stunning and has this amazing sculpture called Dignity.
Back in the car… we drove.. and drove…and drove... to the Badlands National Park. I couldn’t wait to show them to mom and the kids and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!. But, just before entering, I has another HUGE SURPRISE for Brooks
One of Brooks’ favorite animals is the prairie dog. He was so upset last year that we didn’t come out west, because he wanted to see some so bad. He actually held a grudge against me in Mexico that I was denying him this pleasure! Obviously is wasn’t my fault....Davis should have learned how to walk down stairs without falling and breaking his ankle severely... GEEZ DAD!
So, just before entering the Badlands... SURPRISE! We stopped at Badlands Dog Town where prairie dog’s just chilled and you can feed them peanuts. BROOKS WAS BEAMING and was just DELIGHTED by the dog town. We all had so much fun watching them talk to each other and trying to feed them.
We entered the park and stopped at the first scenic overlook… breathtaking.. but SO DAMN HOT! Wow! We continued on and stopped at a few places for the kids and I to climb and to make Nana sick to her stomach! This was the kids first taste of climbing boulders and they had so much fun. I have some very brave kids!
After the Badlands, we hit Wall Drug… Marketing does work!! What a weird place filled with the crap every mother has to say “No” too 1,000 times a day! Ugh, bess Begged and begged for a mood ring.
So in theory, it was only going to take us 60 mins to get to our motel from The Badlands…. what happened??? We pulled into the Black Hills about 2+ hours and realized we needed to go straight to Nana’s top Bucket list item, Mount Rushmore or else we’d miss the evening program.
Holy moly… we pulled into the motel at 10pm and we all CRASHED! What a day!!!!
