naïveté

So my wife was driving the John Deere - she enjoys mowing the lawn... it's her thing...

I was sitting on the patio - 150-450mm lens in-hand looking for interesting shots to take for a little practice hand-holding that beast...

I figured no birds because the tractor was obviously going to scare them off so good time to just practice my hold with some still subject shots...

Bird bath...

Lawn Ornaments...

Then a little moving subject practice...

Oh, look... my wife driving across the property on the tractor... that's handy...

snap, snap, snap...

Things are going well - I'm getting a feel for the balance of the lens as well as the DoF as I play with the aperture...

Wait...

What the bajeebuz!?!

The Cardinal just stationed himself on the feeder...

JUST 8' FROM ME...

AND HE'S CALM AS CAN BE!

Okay, he's either showing off... or on birdie drugs...

Either way...

snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap...

HE'S STILL HERE!

AND CALM!

snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap...

I'm going to wake up and realize this was all a dream, right!?!

Okay, so a theory of why my resident overly twitchy Male Northern Cardinal is SUDDENLY Mr. Calm...

It's not him.

Best guess - based on the not quite full head-o-plumage atop his little head...

He's the son of my usual mated pair...

And, being a young-un, he is not defending a territory and he his not protecting a mate...

aaaaaand...

He's cocky!

Okay, let's be polite and call it naïveté...

Whatever...

Yay for me!!!

snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap, snap... ... ... ... ... ...

:)

The definition of 'cocky'... staring right at me straight down the barrel of my 150-450mm - from only 8' away!

The ones in mulch are cropped pretty heavily - this mulch bed is about 15-20' away from where I'm sitting...

Love these! Your captures really highlight his character. We've had a completely bald (like lizard headed) cardinal hanging around our feeders for almost a month now, and I've been trying so hard to get a photo of him. Apparently the missing feathers can come from a problem with mites, but it doesn't seem to bother affected birds too much.

Thanks! Maybe the mites made him itchy and he wasn't so much being brave as maybe asking me to scratch his little head...  smile

The snap, snap, snap, is definitely a definition of me . Cocky would not be the cardinal, but me feeling so proud of capturing 100,000,photos of a beautiful bird. Don't get me wrong truly loving your narrative and your shots and 100% relating to you. Random Imagination is a perfect fit here! Thanks for sharing such beauties!
