Fluttery Butterflies

Went to Brookfield Zoo today with my sweetie... We were actually just chauffeur for JJ and Lizzie, but it gave us a nice day at the zoo while they had their day at the zoo...

We walked pretty much the entire zoo and ended up at the butterflies... always great to have so many in one spot for photography and I usually bring my 100 2.8 macro when I know I'm going to be seeing butterflies... but today I had a slightly different setup...

Pentax KP wearing a... wait for it... 55-300mm 4-5.8

Yeah - not your typical gonna shoot butterflies gear...

Oh, and for some reason the butterflies were a tad bit more 'fluttery' than usual... so lots of high-speed wing flapping and hopping hither and tither...

So to avoid pretty significant motion blur from all that flapping I was rocking some particularly high shutter speeds which meant higher ISO and pushing the aperture a bit...

And in the tight quarters of the enclosure a wider aperture meant a more shallow depth of field...

With very tiny and rapidly moving butterflies on the receiving end of all of that...

But...

I have to say that I'm pretty happy with the results...

Here are a few of my favorites...

Just proves that it's not the equipment that make the photographer, but  the knowledge and talent. Beautiful captures.
