Lake Lanterns

Have you ever attended the lantern launch during the Asian Fest at Morton Arboretum? Last year I stayed until it was full dark outside and got some of my favorite photos - that inky black with the glowing lanterns all isolated. This year I started shooting a bit earlier and got some shots of the ceremony aspect.

It was fun this year getting to the lake a little earlier and getting to tell a bit of the story of the ceremony along with the lanterns...

Aaaaaaaand one burst into flames - which was kind of interesting in and of itself as we've never seen that happen to one before... and then two more... but I think the messages on them still got through - or at least that's what I'd tell the kids who decorated them and sent their messages on them.

Did have to play a bit with exposure so as to not blow out the lanterns... a little 'expose to the left' and Bob's your uncle... or, rather, my uncle... or somebody's uncle... oh, you know what I mean! ;)

Here are some of last years...

Excellent shots. I was at the Arboretum last Feb. Obviously no lantern show then. The lantern launch has become a big thing around here as well. Problem is that it has become a means of making a quick buck for the companies that sponsor the event, nevertheless it does look like a fun activity based on your photos, definitely one worth attending.

Beautiful night shots - Is that the Morton Arboretum in Lisle Illinois? I was there decades ago (35 yrs) but only in the daytime for a "walk in the park". Thanks for posting and bringing back memories
