Winter Sight...

We decided to go for a walk - in the woods.

It's a thing - we camp, we hike, we walk in the woods.

It is amazingly good for the soul... in any season.

There is always so much to see... if you take the time to actually see.

My family and I - actually, my wife and son told me we were going outside... three days prior.

We kept discussing the zoo, the woods, the arboretum, the... anywhere - outside!

We'd been inside for days, I wanted to do some photography, the weather was beautiful, and we all needed to get away from texts, emails, televisions, computers, video games - the world.

If it hadn't been winter I'd probably have walked right past this fungus (maybe it's a lichen?) - Photo #1...

There were several on this branch/stick, but this was the most intriguing to me... the colors, the shape, the texture... the contrast of it against the greens and whites...

Earlier and later in the walk the other photos - the leaves, the cool wraparound bark thingie, the insect trails... the cool ice patch in a previously flooded and currently frozen rut in the path...

As soon as I took the photo it was my favorite even before I 'chimped' a peek at it on the back of my camera... I'd have known instantly even if I'd been shooting one of my film cameras...

Winter seems to barren - until you look...

Until you see...

... ... ...

That shape...

That texture...

Those colors...

I love spring... and summer... and Fall...

But winter lets you see things you'd otherwise likely glance over hiding amidst all that colorful sensory overload of stuff to see the rest of the year...

I can't really take credit for 'seeing' this one... My wife actually spotted this ice formation and called me over to take the photo...

Beautiful set, and I really appreciate your message about what winter allows us to see. In Georgia we have very thick underbrush, and I love that in winter I can finally see through the forest instead of looking at a wall of green. It's amazing how different things seem when the leaves have dropped away.
