Busy Bee...

Apparently there was a busy little paper wasp the last day or so... he had been making paper - literally - and apparently building a little home in hopes of settling down and raising a family...

We asked him to kindly find another suitable location - we have a big yard so his real estate market is not over saturated and we are confident he'll find a happy home for his family.
Interestingly they make their 'paper' nests basically the same way we make paper - which seems obvious when you realize we learned just about everything we consider 'human advances' from the world and nature around us...
They gather fibers from dead wood and plant stems, which they mix with saliva, and use to construct water-resistant nests made of gray or brown papery material.
Which explains why they feel sort of like paper but paper soaked in maybe a thin solution of Elmer's glue... very pliable, very sturdy, and very resilient...if you try to crush them they basically spring back to shape - very difficult to actually damage one.

Oh, and I processed these on my Samsung phone - I transferred them via wifi from my camera to my phone... then opened and processed them in Lightroom Mobile...

Nice close ups. We have quite a few around the outside of our house. While their paper houses are very cool, their sting is not smile

Ha! True! I had to pull the one off the umbrella - glad he had not gotten too far as of yet... but I am expecting this little guy to find another location nearby and we will give him a side girth of privacy if he chooses an appropriate location...
