Ok, that's why. Now what do we do? (this photo courtesy Gail)

The guides talk for a while, then cook up a great plan. Let's keep going. We'll slowly push around him, in the reeds to the right. He won't mind. I nervously say I guess this happens all the time, right? No, actually we haven't seen many hippos here for a long time. Oh. Ok.

I'm going to have to admit, I was so terrified by this point I couldn't manually focus the camera to shoot the hippo properly through the reeds.

But there he was. Way too close for my liking. And not happy.

That's what I mean. Not happy at all. (this one also courtesy Gail, I was too busy plotting my escape at this point, and working out how I could save the camera if the mokoro was tipped over by Mr H.)

Watch out, here he comes again!

Ok, this bit is a little disgusting. He is massively crapping in the water and using his tail to send it everywhere, in another aggressive display at us. Our guide calmly describes it as a `dung bath'. Meanwhile I am starting to beg in a very undignified way. Can we please just leave? Like, now?

So, get my message, or do you want some more? Because I've barely started on you guys. No big fella, or should I say, Sir, we're on our way. Entirely our fault, Sir. Sincere apologies for any misunderstanding, Sir.

And the rest is a bit of an anticlimax. But at this point I'm perfectly comfortable with the idea of anticlimax. Give me those water lilies ...

#8 is so impressive. We had a similar encounter in the Okavango delta and I really understand what you have experienced. They are incredible beasts.

OMG, this narrow boats make the backside, which doesn't fit in the boat, look like a crocodile appetizer! Great story and shots of hippos - especially #6 (water around the animal, which looks like a nightmare!) and #8 (movement!).
