Weekend away

Sometimes we simply have to get out of Sydney. A favourite place is about two hours north, around Port Stephens and especially the incredibly beautiful Fingal Bay. But please keep it secret, don't want the crowds to find it. Here just south of Fingal at Boat Harbour - love the colours of the ocean.

Where's my long lens when I need it? Back in the car! Two adult humpbacks and two calves were spectacularly breaching over and over again just off the rocks and all I could get was this distant shot.

Pelicans patiently waiting for morsels from the fishermen cleaning their catch. The one in front must be expecting something bigger.

And here comes another one.

And here comes another one.

Someone about to get married overlooking Fingal Bay. Good choice, will guarantee many years of happiness.

The goanna had the best seat in the house. This one is about 1.5 metres, but they can get quite a lot bigger. Generally harmless unless they mistake you for a tree.

Flannel flowers are out everywhere in the national park surrounding Fingal Bay.

A round of golf with my friend Rob. He's the one in the striped shirt. The others are pleasant enough but can get in the way at the wrong moment - anyway, that's my explanation for my atrocious score. This one from my phone, just before hitting my only good shot of the day. Lucky for the kangaroos.

I'm not much of a boating person but they look nice in the afternoon light.

Early dinner overlooking Port Stephens. At 134 square kilometres it is larger than Sydney Harbour. I'm sure that fact would surprise quite a lot of people back in Sydney. Here looking towards Hawks Nest, a few minutes by boat but more than an hour by car.

I can think of worse ways to spend an evening than fishing at Little Beach.

Couldn't resist a second shot of that post sunset scene. The clouds are remnants of a major storm that hit 24 hours earlier, dumping large hail stones. Looks peaceful now, always changing.

Final word goes to the pelican.
