Chaotic, organised, conservative, on the edge, old, new ... and in perpetual motion. If you haven’t been to Hanoi yet you simply haven’t lived.

This graffiti guy cropped up a couple of times. There is actually quite a lot of graffiti in Hanoi, not a place one usually associates with civil disobedience. But that's all part of the intriguing contradiction of modern Hanoi.

Where to start? The streets of the old quarter are as good a place as any. Hanoi's old quarter is an extraordinary place, 30 plus streets that have largely retained their unique heritage, organised by the goods and services provided, such as shoes, jewellery and fabrics. Life is lived on the street.

The struggles of the past are always evident, with some new interpretations. And of course, the ubiquitous motorcycles. You can never escape them. Apart from providing personal transport, they play an essential role in distribution networks.

Street vendors are everywhere, nimbly mixing with the traffic. I'd like to understand more of their story - how and where they live, their income, the supply chain.

There's an interesting section of rail line running nearby. Houses sit right on the line and life goes on.

The tourists have had an impact on the old quarter - here a cool looking place with menu in English advertising the obligatory smoothies. At the moment it seems in proportion and hopefully will not take over completely.
