Royal National Park, Sydney

A cool and cloudy winter's day was perfect for a coastal walk in the Royal National Park south of Sydney.

Wildflowers are in bloom everywhere along the coastal track even though it is early winter in Sydney.

Our entry point to the Royal National Park was inland near beautiful Audley Weir.

These days the track is clear and easy to follow. It wasn't that way when I camped there many years ago.

The national park - the second oldest in the world after Yellowstone - is huge - 150 square kilometres of it, just south of Sydney and the airport. We took a 10 kilometre section of the coastal path.

Starting point for the walk was beautiful Wattamolla. Shame about the cloudy day but it was still gorgeous.

First stop was Little Marley Beach, unchanged since I camped here as a young man. I remember accidentally hooking a moray eel off those rocks - it gave a huge fight before it bit through the hook.

I also remember waves just like this with hundreds of large fish glinting in the sun, possibly herded in by dolphins or sharks.

Wildflowers are out in abundance despite the time of year.

As are birds - here a fairly common white-faced heron.

I tried all day to get this little guy, a New Holland honey eater, plentiful across the park but way too fast for me to snap. This is the best I managed.

Anyway, I really enjoyed returning to the Royal National Park after many years.
