A week in the Yasawas

The beautiful Yasawa Islands are located a few hours by boat to the north-west of Nadi, Fiji. Their picture-postcard scenery, coral and fish live up to the promises on the travel sites.

View south from Drawaqa Island.

You start in Nadi, which has some pretty good views of its own.

Sunset back over the airport was pretty spectacular.

A promising start to the holiday.

Next day it was the `Yasawa Flyer', a large-ish boat that drops tourists to various islands daily. You're met by speedboats to get you ashore. This was not our stop but so far looking good.

This guy does a dance on a rocky outcrop to meet the Flyer. All for the tourists but it's fun.

Our first few days were on Drawaqa Island - just a spec in the ocean really but stunningly beautiful.

... and on the ground. This delightful little fellow is the Beci (pronounced bethi) - a ground dweller who was really elusive but I finally got a snap. I believe it is highly endangered and only survives on a couple of small islands.

Natural arrangements are always the best.

But there's much more to see under water. What a mistake not to have an underwater camera with us. The fish and coral were amazing.

We swam with manta rays and sharks - not nearly as scary as it sounds. This is a screen grab from the video of someone else who was swimming next to me.

Each day quite different.

And sunrises were also great. This one on the next island we stayed at, Kuata.

Just another Kuata sunrise.

Kuata is slightly bigger than Drawaqa and has great walks along with the fantastic snorkeling.

After a few days it's time to catch the Yasawa Flyer back to Nadi. The speedboats come out to meet it with luggage and passengers.
