38,000 humpback whales are currently making their way up the coast of Australia.

We took a late afternoon whale watching trip from Nelson Bay, Port Stephens. The boat was quite small, in fact, much smaller than the whales we hoped to see.

It took a while to locate the humpbacks, but eventually a few surfaced near our boat. When I was young such a sight was extremely rare, but humpback numbers have bounced back significantly in recent decades. Now you see many of them off the east coast at certain times of year.

Because you don't see the whole whale at once, their size can be deceptive. Take it from me, they are huge.

Yes, sometimes you forget to do the touristy things in your own back yard! Well worth doing.
