Collecting gemstones and minerals has been one of my hobbies since I was a kid. Nowadays, I don't actively expand my collection anymore but I have some interesting pieces lying around that were just begging to be my model. 😛
I started with a relatively large piece of smoky quartz. Since it exists out of small crystals, it was terribly difficult to get the lighting right. In the end, I got the best results using two light sources: one for general lighting and another to add the sparkles. ✨
I wanted a picture where more crystals were in focus, so I increased my aperture to the max and played around with my focus.
I didn't manage to get everything in focus but I did get some nice sparkles. 🙂 I find it very fascinating how a small change in lighting can result in an entirely different end result!
Finally, a last shot taken from a completely different perspective:
I've learned that taking pictures of sparkly things is a lot more complicated than it seems, but I"ll keep trying. 😄 Have any of you ever tried to take pictures of gemstones/minerals? Tips and tricks are always welcome!
