Gemstones Part 1: Smoky Quartz

by Jolien Dekens February. 25, 2019 156 views

Collecting gemstones and minerals has been one of my hobbies since I was a kid. Nowadays, I don't actively expand my collection anymore but I have some interesting pieces lying around that were just begging to be my model. 😛

I started with a relatively large piece of smoky quartz. Since it exists out of small crystals, it was terribly difficult to get the lighting right. In the end, I got the best results using two light sources: one for general lighting and another to add the sparkles. ✨

This is one of the first shots I took. Because my aperture was very wide, only the back line of crystals are in focus.

This is one of the first shots I took. Because my aperture was very wide, only the back line of crystals are in focus.

I wanted a picture where more crystals were in focus, so I increased my aperture to the max and played around with my focus.

I didn't manage to get everything in focus but I did get some nice sparkles. 🙂 I find it very fascinating how a small change in lighting can result in an entirely different end result!

Finally, a last shot taken from a completely different perspective:

I've learned that taking pictures of sparkly things is a lot more complicated than it seems, but I"ll keep trying. 😄 Have any of you ever tried to take pictures of gemstones/minerals? Tips and tricks are always welcome!

Beautiful.
Putting them on a reflective surface (mirror) will help- you'll get more light on the surface-which will reveal the details.
Otherwise outside in the sunlight will help. You have the right ideas and got good results!

Keep a good depth of field, like you did, if you want to show detail!
You are welcome!
Let me know when you post more with the results you are looking for, I'd love to see them!
(my daughter collects them too!)

Sure! I have some other very reflective ones as well that I want to photograph.
This is maybe a silly question but how exactly can I let you know? xD
I haven't come across a feature like personal messages or something like that :p
