Day 24: Bäckerei & Konditorei Waldtraut Balzer

Front window of bakery down the Sophia Straße

My teacher had recommended this bakery, and it is totally worth it. It is just a couple blocks away from Goethe. Hidden down a quiet street with no flashy sign, it feels so genuine, like a neighborhood bakery. The front window was filled with all of these delicious pastries and cakes. Inside there were all the best german breads and rolls. Germany makes me want to take up a career as a baker. In fact, that's probably the most concrete “career goal” that I've had in a while. Let's go with that.

I had the pastry in the second row on the left. It was a flaky pastry crust with a brown sugar crumble on top.

Also, had a Laugen baguette, which is like a pretzel in mini-baguette form. The crust on good german bread is nice and crispy, contrasting perfectly with the soft inside. It's always so chewy and thick that it takes time to eat. Maybe if we rediscovered bread like that in the U.S., we would have to eat a little slower.
