Day 35: Sehnsuchtsorte im Hauptbahnhof

View through the glass ceiling of the Hauptbahnhof (Main-train-station)

I managed to slip my way into a performance piece in Berlin's main train station. About fifteen of us held cardboard signs with our “places of desire” written on them. They ranged from concrete places, such as “Utah Redrock” and "Meer (Sea)“ to less concrete, ”Zurück zum Anfang (Back to the Beginning)". We would separately move through the train station without a word, and all pass through a certain point every five minutes. It lasted for 40 minutes in total, but only felt like 10.

Most of performance is simply researching and learning the how, when, who, and why's of doing performance. I got to mark the differences between people who saw my sign with curiosity or with confusion and experiment with subtle or obvious ways of holding my sign, among other things.

It was blind luck to get a chance to take part in the performance, but it's inspiring to remember that performance can take place anywhere. There's no waiting for it. You simply make it; the answers, theories, and perceptions come later.

And a great opportunity to make friends, because art brings people together. As if that's surprising.
