The hummingbird activity has dropped off significantly around my house. It used to be 20 - 30 hummingbirds dueling it out for dominance for the feeders.
I am lucky if I see 2 or 3 together now.confused

Any thoughts on what has changed?

Not sure John,
It might be that so many people in the area put up feeders and they  just have  more choices.
On a side note, I have noticed a drop in bee activity as well. I used to have to move my feeders around because the bees would overtake the feeders.
Hummingbirds do not like bees. A mystery.

We have many more feeders up in the neighborhood this year as well, but my guess is that they don't tend them well. Hummingbirds don't like competition and maybe they've decided yours was too much of an "open market". As a biologist, I'm always wondering, and h'bird behavior is so poorly studied - they are just too difficult, even for the younger and more agile! I have noticed a drop in the bee activity, too,  which I attribute to pesticide use.

They have to wait and take turns now. You need to add a second feeder if you want to keep up your customer service.

We have two! Last year there were three, but that was too much to keep refilled and cleaned. They have to be cleaned regularly because the birds transmit mold and bacteria from their beaks into the feed cups and the solution. We refill every day and clean every other day. But they are worth the work!
