Day 317: Columns

by John Nelson November. 13, 2010 2441 views

The columns at the University of Arkansas' Mullins' Library have always fascinated me. I've never tried photographing the repeating line pattern of them, but got a chance the other day.

I wasn't sure what mood I wanted, so I did 3 edits of the same shot. The first is essentially as it appeared. The 2nd is a ghostly effect, which is what my mood thinks of when walking down this walkway. Something about so many places for attackers to jump out at me, I guess. The 3rd is simply a charcoal rendering, bringing out the textures and contrast of light & dark concretes.

Love the perspective. I like #3 best. Seems softer and balanced.

I like all the edits, but I still prefer the blue bikes against the columns. I do think the last one is good because you haven't lost the bikes like you do in the second one. Try not to get mugged!

Good shot - I'd also like to see a fairly grainy / contrasty black and white. Think it might suite this well.

Nice set, John! I like the brightness of the first the best, but the other two are really interesting treatments.

I think I like #3 the best...but it probably depends on what mood I'm in at the time. Nice job.
