Faith Builder

Yesterday, some co-workers and I went to Joplin, Missouri to assist with relief donation sorting. If you remember, Joplin was hit by a category 5 tornado, killing 200+ people and wiping 33% of the city off the map. 3 months later, most of the debris cleanup has been tackled, and are now on to the next phase of the cleanup.

The amazing part of the destruction is how one side of the street is 100% gone, while the other side of the same street saw minor damage.

I did notice an interesting thing on the street we walked: 1 house was gone except for the foundation. A shattered picture of Jesus was laid there with clothes & stuffed animals. Directly across the street was a minorly damaged house with Buddha statues on the entrance columns.

While my first thought was “Guess which deity appears more powerful?”. And then I realized that comfort, enlightenment, peace, & joy are not things that Jesus promised those who follow him while on earth. He said it would be tough, full of persecution, and that our reward is stored up for us in Heaven, not in our earthly homes.

A shattered picture of Jesus lays on the remains of a house foundation with toys, clothing, and debris left over from the tornado in Joplin, MO. The foundation is the only thing remaining.

Directly across the street, a wind-damaged-only house has statues of Buddha on their entrance steps.

Love the perspective in the first one, John. It's hard to imagine that much destruction, isn't it?
