“Mount Fyffe and the Seaward Kaikoura Range dominate the Kaikoura skyline. Superb views over the Kaikoura plains and peninsula reward those who climb on Mt Fyffe.” That is the official description of Mt Fyffe and its walks by New Zealand’s Department of Conservation.
It is a demanding trail that starts at around 200 m above sea level and takes you up to Mt Fyffe at 1602 m. The hike is a steady, relentless and seemingly endless climb.
The difficulty is not the slope itself, it is simply the fact that there is no section in the track that gives you a bit of a breather with a lesser incline or a brief descent for a change. Be that as it may, as the description promised, the views on either side of the ridge are worthwhile.
