Queenstown is a wondrous place that 99% of visitors coming to the country’s South Island stop at. It is New Zealand’s, if not the world’s, high risk activity capital offering everything from various bungy jumps, sky diving, jet boat riding, canyon swinging, rafting... you name it. As all of these activities come with a hefty price tag and both of us had done most of them here in New Zealand in 2006/2007 we did not opt for any of them this time around. Instead, we used old fashioned methods to conquer the local mountains, using our own two feet.
Ben Lomond is a track that starts right in town, next to the Queenstown Gondola station, and is a full day hike that offers spectacular views over Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables mountain range and much more.
We also ventured up to the Remarkables Ski Area where there is a short but good hike up to Lake Alta - aka Dimrill Dale for any LOTR fans.
A few more smaller adventures here and there make the list of our Queenstown experience complete.
