Mt Sunday was the location for “Edoras” in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Although most visitors come to the site for this very reason, the scenery is stunning and worthwhile for any nature or landscape lover; even if you are not familiar with or a particular fan of the movies.
Mt Sunday is an isolated hill (rather than a mountain) situated in the centre of a plain that is surrounded by mountains with streams and a flowing river. Back in 2006 and 2007, if you did not join an expensive organized tour that would ford the water with its 4WD vehicle you had to cross the streams and river on foot (absolutely worth it). Now there is a clearly marked path and small bridges have been built to facilitate the access. The climb of Mt Sunday has therefore lost a touch of its original adventurous spirit, but the location and landscape still retain their appeal and charm. Despite its accessibility there still aren’t too many visitors to this remote mountain in the province of Canterbury - at least not during shoulder season.
