Just a day or two before these pictures were taken our guide had told us that the previous week he had witnessed a herd of elephants swimming across one of the narrow sections of the lake. He was even able to capture it on film and showed us the video. The video itself was absolutely stunning to watch and I told my husband that seeing a swimming elephant, even just a single one, would be a dream come true as they are my favourite animal. I am fascinated by the fact that such a large animal has the elegance and agility to swim in deep waters.
As we enjoyed our first boat safari we opted for another. Although the wildlife sightings were not as plentiful this time around, we were having a good time enjoying the nature and the company of other friendly guests. On our way back to the boat dock there was a dark spec by the water, far away in the distance. With the binoculars we were just able to identify it as an elephant that was either going for a drink or - I held my breath - going for a swim across the lake. Within a few moments the elephant’s actions made it clear that it meant to cross the water. As we were still quite a distance away we were not sure if we would be able to make it in time to see the elephant mid-action.
Luckily we did. I couldn’t believe my eyes and naturally enjoyed every moment of it. To me, it was such a special experience that still keeps me smiling from ear to ear when I think back on it. Not only did the elephant cross the lake but it then decided to stick around and put some sun screen/ insect repellent on its back, all in plain sight.
A truly magical experience.

Wow, wow, wow! This is a dream-set! I really envy you for this experience!
Thank you, Heike. I still can’t believe that happened and we actually got to witness it. It was magical!
