I was determined to keep the kittens out of the paint. I left the wrong door open for one minute and Gordie, who thinks he's auditioning for a sitcom, ran in, stuck his foot in the primer, turned around and high-tailed it out of there, leaving white primer footprints all over the apartment.

I caught him, washed his foot, and put him into the stairwell while I went around cleaning up all the footprints. My upstairs neighbor happened to have her door open, so he took that chance to get on to her balcony, climb over the edge and get stuck on the roof (for the second time this week).

She phoned me to say he was out there, and was afraid he'd try jumping to a tree, since he couldn't climb down the roof. I was tempted to go up there and throw him off myself. It all worked out in the end. Though when I was painting a door in the hallway, he reached around from UNDER the door to put his pawprint on the wet paint.

I love cats.

It started with one little project.

The painter - self portrait where I don't manage to get the roller in the picture. I took a couple, and then I wanted to get the camera safely away from the painting area. I'm accident-prone.

What a down-turned mouth I have! Who said ‘after 40, you get the face you deserve’?

I'm on the first wall, and I've already got paint in my hair.

I'm happy these days, so I'm into happy colours. I decided (after careful thought for 30 seconds) to stain the balcony to look like the ocean at playa del carmen. This picture is the the first step. Tomorrow I will be able to photograph the finished balcony. If it hadn't been blue, I would have gone for raspberry red. That's one nice thing about being single - you can choose the colours without having to reach consensus. On the down side, there is no-one to blame but yourself if it turns out looking terrible.

Herr inspector.

I love going to Merit Paints. These guys are great. They might think it's crazy to stain your deck blue and turquoise, but if that's what you want to do, they will be able to tell you how. Paint, flooring, carpets, stain, glazes, humour, knowledge, service - this ain't home depot.

I painted a ceiling, lots of doors and trim, walls, an indoor floor, a deck and anything else I could find. I'm very happy with my stamina. I used to get tired and sloppy, but I worked steadily for two days, and got more done then I thought I could.
