birth: beauty in pain and love

by Julia Gotz February. 07, 2008 15238 views

Gabrielle flowed through the process of giving birth. James radiated love and excitement. Little Elska is a marvel. She opened her beautiful eyes wide, took immediate comfort in her mother's touch, and knew just what to do right from the start.

About two hours after the birth, James, Gabrielle and baby Elska were ready to go home together. She had never given birth before and, with Marlene's expert guidance, she just did it. A few hours from check in to check out of the hospital.

Gabrielle seemed to stay present and in touch with her body through the birth. In a few days, I want to ask her about her feelings during the birth, and I'll add more text later.

She's entranced with her baby and her partner. I don't think she has really noticed what a phenomenal woman she is.

p.s.: here is Elska a month later [photoblog.com].

Baby E. is on the way. Gabrielle has chosen natural childbirth. She's resting between contractions.

I am not a mother, and I didn't know what I might experience in the delivery room. I have seen many ‘befores’ and many ‘afters’, but the during was a mystery to me. I was unprepared for how shockingly beautiful a birth could be. Ordinarily, I find seeing someone in physical pain very disturbing. There was something different about this time. It was the way she let her pain move through her. I am in awe of her. Here she looks to me like something Michaelangelo might have carved in marble.

Midwife Marlene puts her heart into her work.

This is the final contraction. This is the birth.

and there she is, giving us her first yawp.

at the heart of the turning world

I'm bound by the beauty.

somebody's mother and father.

Somebody. Welcome to the world, little Elska. Elska means ‘to love’ and also ‘beloved’. Elska Shalom. Looks to me like she's counting her blessings.

James is holding his daughter for the first time.

what a gift she has given me - to invite me to be a witness here.

I agree with Ryana whose favorites I found this in. Wiping the tears from my face as I speak. Staggeringly beautiful images.

Great photos Julia, reminds me of the strength that woman do have, knowing pretty much what they are getting into, for the miricle of life, they go on with it. Proves that strength is measured in not by muscles alone, but with-in the mind. Very well done, and good taste in this display of the miricle at work..........

Powerful post.
What has more power than life? Nothing.
Birth is the most magical, memorable moment one can live.
You caught the suffer and the joy magnificiently in these shots.
What a great luck you had to be allowed to be there with your camera, and what a great luck we all have here to be allowed to contemplate the work of a wonderfully talented photographer such as you!

I was holding my breath while looking at these... THe birth of my son seems to be so close like yesterday... these images reminded me of those amazing moments. Not the pain, because the pain you forget the moment the baby is there... but this increadible feeling of power and joy. I am sure she is as thankful for documenting so wonderfully the most important moments of her life as thankful you are for having witnessed this fantastic event. I can imagine someone who did not experience something like that would think this is too intimate to share it with the public... but when you give birth, you want to share it with the whole world (this is how I felt too, I have Jamies birth on video)... it is the most wonderful and natural experience of the life! Thanks for sharing, thank you sooo much!
