Waiting For The Goddess On Gangaur

by Lokendra Rathore April. 06, 2011 4688 views

Gangaur is one of the most important festivals of Rajasthan. Gangaur is derived from joining the two words Gan meaning Lord Shiva and Gauri meaning Goddess Parvati, his consort.
The rituals for this festival start on the day of the Holi dahan ( day before the Holi, the festival of colors). When ashes are collected from the Holi Fire to plant seeds of wheat and barley in it.
During the next sixteen days 16 Goddesses are worshiped. And on the 3rd day of Navratra ( new year according the Indian Calendar) , Gangaur festival is held when the Idol of Gangaur is taken out in a procession accompanied by horses, elephants, camel carts and brass bands playing maudlin tunes.

We are in the campus of the Jaipur City Palace which has become the assembly ground/ dressing room for the participants of the procession of the Goddess Gauri on Gangaur.

We are waiting for the clock to strike 5.30 pm when the procession will start with the appearance of the Idol of Goddess seated on a silver palanquin, while the participants of the procession are getting ready.

A bullock cart .

Elephants getting ready for the procession.

This is not a very wise thing to do!
The elephant may be a pet but it is still an animal.

Ready for the procession.

An old man plays Shehnai, while riding a bullock cart.

Here is the Goddess!

Having had darshan people are already dispersing to go home.
The ladies, who kept fast, will break their fast now & have the only meal of the day.

The procession has started. The tourists from abroad are enjoying the view of the procession from the balcony of the,now defunct, Hind Hotel.Special arrangements had been made by the tourism department,RTDC.
