Mission Statement

Well, I was thinking that I should make a post about what this blog will be.

As you may know, I have recently moved to Nanaimo with Rileigh for her work. I didn't really have a career in Victoria and it's too hard to be away from her so when she was offered a position up here it was a pretty immediate decision that I would come. So far things are okay up here. Everything is actually really good, except for the problem of finding work for me. It's only been a week but I'm already a bit discouraged. Discouragement is really not the kind of attitude that life rewards though so I just have to keep on keeping on.

In light of my unemployment, I wanted a creative project that would get me out of the house and keep me busy. I think that this little blog is the perfect thing. I'm hoping that it will inspire me to explore Nanaimo and the surrounding area, and also to learn a few things.

The two things I'm learning about in regards to photography right now are editing, and how to take a good god damn landscape photo. I feel like I can take a picture of someone and most of the time I'm happy with it, but I am never satisfied with my landscape stuff.

I also wanted to impose a rule of only uploading pictures around the same day that they were taken. I cheated a bit already with my second post but I think from now on I will follow this rule as it will prevent me from resting on my laurels.

Anyways. I hope that gives some insight into why I created this blog and what kind of energy will be going into the photos.

P.S. Here's a couple attempts at lake landscapes from yesterday.

Good luck, Kelly! Whenever I feel discouraged about not getting the "right" shot, I remember what my photography teacher in college told us: you will take 100 photos to get 2-3 good shots. Keep shooting! =)

That's good to hear. I do subscribe to sort of a "spray and pray" philosophy sometimes. Thanks!

I've been where you have. Discouraged and obsessed with the perfect shot and opportunity. Stewed on where to constantly take great landscape shots. I walked away from my camera four years ago, and am just now restarting where I left off. Stay passionate, you have a great eye for landscape work, don't make the same mistake I did years ago. I will definitely be following your work.

Nice landscape photos! I like the top one especially, it has a dark, moody, mysterious feel.
