As the New Year approaches I was reminded of this poem I wrote. It is about the feeling that comes when the brevity of life is understood. The years are fading, few and unknown. Fear felt the biggest as I wrote this poem four years ago. Fear believed can stifle growth. But I've found the one and only unchanging and constant One. I call Him "the single heart that beats" in this poem because His is the only life that never changes. His unchangingness is comfort and blows away fear as I grow and change daily. And I'm unafraid and living captivated by Him, just as the colors above captivated me that warm evening on the black coast.

Growing is hard, don’t you know

air in and freeze

stuck in a moment of fear.

What’s safe?

And who’s real?

And why can’t I explain the way I feel?

the closest and surest

things shake.

And perspective flipped

it’s I that quake,

and wonder what a piece of sand can mean

and what a drop of water can do

and what’s the point of a flower?

Do I live in a tower?

Do I know the world?

I love the rain.

Why do I fear the storm?

Bedrock melts.

the sun, up and down.

Comings, goings, deadlines and sleep.

Where will I cling?

Where will it not sting?

When will the truth ring

loud for feeling

to spring

from truth chosen and unchanging?

Air is out, slowly in and out.

Deeper than my heart

sinking through the floor.

Deeper than the night

out the back door.

Deeper than the storm-winds

can reach.

Deeper than the words

of those who preach.

Deeper than pens

and deeper than speech...

Constant is the rhythm

of a single heart that beats.
