Twelve Boys

This poem was inspired by Jesus and his disciples, those ordinary young guys he chose to be his friends, and it changed the world. As well as Genesis 1 and thinking about humanity made in the image of God, which makes each one valuable and dignified. El Salvador, 2014.

Where do you choose to look?
It’s just another twelve boys
in another distant school...
The same shoes
The same pants
The same shirts
The same skin
But the faces break the pattern
And it’s time to learn
to see
to be
with each one.
Remembering another twelve,
outcasts, unnoticed and dejected,
their identity resurrected,
their uniqueness and unity protected.
It began with a look in the face,
a choice to embrace
the divine breath was not a waste
the Eternal image encased
in every single face.
