Sunlight Through Aspens

by Kevin Wenning February. 03, 2019 205 views

This is the photo I mentioned yesterday where I was enjoying the strong light while a group of photographers sat 10 feet away waiting for clouds to block the sun. This could be a decent scene with flat light I suppose, but I always prefer a strong contrast of lights and darks and layering of colors and tones to pull my eyes deep into the image. These are the sort of places I seek out when I head to the mountains in Colorado in the fall.

Too often I see photographers confused about how to shoot a scene with strong sunlight. Sure I like the filtered sunlight during dawn and dusk, but if you can only shoot in those conditions then your options are severely limited.

This photo has been on my phone lock screen for about a year now. It's my happy place.

Beautiful colors and light! And good observations about working with strong light. Something I could probably stand to learn more about.

Thanks Bethany. I have photographed with people of both sides of the argument. I say, digital storage is cheap, just take as many photos as you can. Who cares if you discard them later. It's still fun to take them and learn as you do it.

I have only been once. It's packed with photographers in the fall but there are so many spots to shoot, you can always find something unique.

Thanks Laurie. I think I'll start focusing on the story instead of the mechanics. A bit more romance and less ranting might be good eh?

I can't disagree. But. I do think it's also about the experience of making the photo. If the photo isn't great but you had a good time making it or learned something new by making it, that's a success too I think.

Right, the experience IS part of the story.
Keep on keeping on!
