Rural Winter

This is another one of those scenes that I drive past every day and pay little attention to. One morning the clouds were sitting just right to cast shadow on the landscape but light up the mountains in the distance. I blew off a meeting that morning to run home for my camera and come back for a few photos.

This is a treatment I've played with on a few other photos lately too. Rather than doing a straight black and white conversion, adding some tone to the photos extends the life and usefulness of many of my images.

This is an amazing shot. I think there should be 100 reasons why you choose square frame but I still wonder what it will be like in 16:9. I love it as it is. Calm and lonly feeling rather than dynamic one is that I love from this framing. smile

I think I went with the 1x1 ratio because I was going to print it and that crop left me with the majority of the image while cropping out some stuff on the right. I didn't try other ratios but you've got me thinking I need to now.

It's astonishing how many familiar places that we 'never truly see' until one day illuminated by a certain conditions of light we suddenly gaze in awe .... Love the way that you've tried to create the emotion of that revelation 🙂.

Thank you Stephen. Your statement is very true, and honestly I think that's something that makes a good photographer. It's important to be able to make a good photo under any conditions, but also important to know how to evaluate a scene and wait for the right conditions.

Thank you Heidi. I'm going to keep trying this treatment on other frames as well. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks Heike. I thought about driving to another spot where I could get just the mountains, but the clouds were moving fast and the light would have been gone by the time I got to a new position. I like this one with the old grain elevator as my hero just fine too.

Love the tone editing - works really well with the ominous clouds in the sky.

Interesting Bethany. The clouds are the weak spot for me in the edit, but they do add a mood that wouldn't be there otherwise I guess.

Nice rendering Kevin!
I am doing the same thing, making the conscious effort to notice the things that have been too familiar!

I rather enjoy the toning of the image and the image itself works quite nciely with the treatment .

Thanks Russell. That's always the catch isn't it; making sure the treatment enhances the scene instead of forcing it just because it worked well once. A friend bought this as a print from me and asked me to let him know when I had more in the same style. I haven't been able to create any more that I liked as well. I think the scene was just right moreso than my editing skills being all that.

This is one of those that spent some time in Topaz. I love their plugins for generating creative ideas.
