Jiarong Tibetan Flower Festival Journal Part 1

by Jay Keywood November. 25, 2016 1890 views

These photos are from a small celebration of the Tibetan Buddhist Flower Festival in a small village in western Sichuan province, China, in 2009.  It's basically a huge party. Family and friends gather in tents to eat and drink and spend time together. Then a fire is started with green branches, causing a lot of smoke.  Rice wine and flour are thrown on the fire, as monks chant and prayers are thrown into the air on small pieces of paper. Men on horses ride through the smoke and prepare to race and parade through the village. After the horse racing, women gather for traditional dances.

Amazing story, Jay! I love the way you have captured the richness and colors of this ceremony. The way you tell the story, both in your words and photograohy, makes it a wonderfull read.

#4 Amazing shot.
#6 I am a sucker for smoke in photography. Beautiful capture with great composition.
#5 Super sharp subject. Are you using manual focus on a zoom lens here?

Thank you so much for sharing with all of us.

This is some stunning work, Jay. Rich, deep colors. I love rural China well off the beaten path. It makes for very rewarding travel experiences. When were you in Sichuan?

Thank you, Ben! This was in 2009; I spent a summer there traveling around a bit with a friend who owns a mountaineering company (I didn't do any mountaineering though).

Amazing work. It's like being there among them. I love how this world has so many cultures to offer us.
