Day 1: The New Year

Happy New Year everyone! I hope that you have all started 2017 with enthusiasm for photography! I certainly have. I have learnt a lot of photography skills in 2016, but there is always more to learn.

This is my New Year's quote for 2017:

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're doing something. ~ Neil Gaiman

This year I will be doing something I've never done before. A 365 day photography blog! It will push my creativity and will make me try new things. I invite you to join me in my quest to better my photography skills.

Portrait orientation. The night sky filled with thousands of stars. New Zealand Tea-tree in the foreground lit with a flashlight.

This is what the night sky looks like in New Zealand at 12:41 AM!

How I created this photo:

1. I went out in the cold night and set up my camera on a tripod.

2. My camera settings:

Photo no.1; ISO-2000 (for the stars), 20 sec, f/4.5, 18mm.

Photo no.2; ISO-400 (for the trees), 30 sec, f/5.6, 18mm.

3. I took two photos, one of the stars and one for the trees. I painted in the light with a flashlight .

4. In Photoshop, I brought out the best in each photo and combined them with Layer Masks.

I sincerely hope that you will have a good new year!

Wow, I love clear starry skies like this SO MUCH... probably because I have always lived in a city with cloudy skies and street lights. BEAUTIFUL picture! The framing of the trees really adds interest and appeal, drawing your eyes toward the focus of the picture... the wondrous sky. Absolutely in love.

Thanks, Anna! I live in Kaitaia, quite a small town, so there is not much light pollution at all. It makes for some very clear skies at night!

I am always fascinated by night sky images - well done on a clear star shot.
