Day 89: Clouds In The Night Sky

There is something magical about long exposures and night photography. It is so exciting to take photos of a seemingly dark scene and then getting something much better!

My approach to capturing the night sky was to include the clouds and bamboo to give perspective to the photo. I love how the clouds turned out! The movement in the clouds adds a very cool dynamic component to the shot.

It was not easy to focus on the stars but I did it! I experimented with the shutter-speed and ISO to get the stars bright but without star trails. I got this one at around 40 seconds to keep the stars uniform.

The night sky ful of bright stars and orange clouds, The lower left is full of silhouetted bamboo.

I really like having the clouds in the shot. It adds a interesting sense of distance to the composition!

Metadata: D5300, 18-105mm @18mm, f/4, 43 sec, ISO-1600.

Editing: Photoshop (luminosity masks to only remove noise from the dark parts of the image), Camera Raw (basic adjustments), Color Efex Pro (corrections in colour and contrast).

...

I like the night. Without the dark, we'd never see the stars.  ~ Stephenie Meyer
