08.03.13 - Sonoma

Oh yes, we went back to wine country. This time Sonoma, and Lizzy was joining us.

We started the day at Ravenswood, famous for its three bird and claw icon (you've seen it before, popular even in east coast stores: http://www.ravenswoodwinery.com/). [ravenswoodwinery.com] We tasted mainly a variety of zins, along with some estate and other special variety zins. Pretty tasty, but perhaps a little on the “octane” side of wine. Afterwards, we headed into the town of Sonoma but stopped to split a loaf of bread and side of cheese before hitting up our next winery, Hawkes.

Hawkes was a nice tasting experience mainly because we were the only customers in the store at the time and could really indulge the host's knowledge of local wines and wineries. Here we went through a little chardonnay, cabs sauv, and merlot (despite having watched Sideways a few days earlier). Wine was good, but we didn't stay too long because we had one more spot we desperately wanted to reach before the day was up.

We wandered down a little alley in downtown Sonoma before finding Westwood winery, highly regarded on Yelp (and for good reason!). Here they really gather wines from the area rather than producing, and the tasting is less of a tasting and more so of a relax, converse, and think for yourself what the wine means to you experience. We did just that. We enjoyed the occasional company of our hostess, who had a sharp sense of humor and was really in no rush to push us out of the tasting salon that we lingered in over an hour after it closed (among other patrons). We sampled pinot noir, rose, and syrahs here, and left with a bottle of rose, possibly because our conversation peaked over it.

We drove home south as the fog rolled in, stopping for sushi in Berkeley at John's favorite Kirala, sharing stories from Tallahassee, Peru, California, Asia, Europe, Canada, South America, and beyond… mostly imagining where we all would possibly travel to next.
