08.05.13 - UC Berkeley

More from UC Berkeley today… including the California Memorial Stadium on my way up to the Fire Trial, random statues and buildings and archways… a beautiful campus really.

For my last fantastic day in CA we went up to campus, I attended John's lecture, ate at a hipstery place on Telegraph (Melt - all grilled cheese all the time), ran the Fire Trail, grabbed a zip car (in case of a talked about BART strike), grabbed more good pizza, and attended a chocolate tasting at Alegio Chocolate before hitting up Trader Joe's for a few last minute revisions. John found the chocolate tasting on Groupon. The tasting involved a short description and video of the chocolate harvester, Claudio Corallo's field in São Tomé e Príncipe, west of equatorial Africa. We sampled 100% chocolate bars, chocolate bars with salt and white pepper, orange, lavender, sea salt, nibs, coffee beans, and crystallized sugar in them. We were also afforded the opportunity to crush our own cocoa bean and dissect the grain (the bitter part) from the “nib” (the meaty part). It was a neat experience, worth the groupon price but probably not the full price ($30 for two at full price). Being only two hours after our tasting, I'm still happily buzzing from the caffeine (much to John's dismay).

The picture of John's lecture is to see if and when he ever checks my photoblog, because this picture was mostly unbeknownst to him. :)
