Chanukkah

Saturday 8th December 2012 marked the first evening of the 8 days of Chanukkah. Every evening we light candles, one more each night and if you are lucky you also get small gifts, although my family stopped the presents once we all grew up. However my favourite part of this festival is the food. As oil is very important both sweet and savoury foods are often fried, this year I cooked a batch of potato latkes, that will be eaten with some fried fish later and doughnuts. This was my first attempt at doughnuts and although very yummy I think I need to find a better recipe as they are a little too doughy.

Anyway to those who celebrate happy Chanukkah

Potato latkes cooking.

This is really simple, just cook and mash some potatoes, when slightly cooled as egg, salt and paprika, form into patties and then fry!

This is my mum's old Chanukiah (or menorah) from Israel. The white candle at the far right is known in English as the servant candle as is used to light the other candles. Each night we light one extra candle, tonight is the second night, so there are only 2 candles but eventually there will be 8.

Doughnuts

My first ever attempt and these are just small doughnuts but if anyone has any recipes that don't need to deep fat fryer they are most welcome :-)

I was also going to suggest that recipe, but will try to send you others from my computer. Great post. Sorry I didn't see it when it was still Chanukah.

Happy Holidays Dannii and your potato latkes look great, they must smell wonderful while they are cooking. Try Marjorie's recipe for "Muffins that taste like Donuts"...they are baked and they seem to be very much like what you have posted here....I also made these muffins if you would like to take a look at the recipe go here.."DONUTS"
