New Zealand Part 3: Rotorua, Turangi, & Tongariro

After a week at beaches, we headed inland for some hiking. Are first stop was Rotorua, where we unfortunately only got to spend half a day.

We walked along the edge of Lake Rotorua during our morning, where there was an assortment of birds.

It’s not a penguin, but it sure looked like one from a distance!

Next we headed to Turangi, where we did some white water rafting, and hiked the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing 19.4 km one way hike across a volcanic alpine landscape. We started in the early morning hours and had the pleasure of a beautiful sunrise.

The clouds rolling over the ridge in the photo above are where we are headed on this hike, and for the rest of the day we are hiking through the clouds.

The fog was so thick we could hardly see anything in front of us. We had a quick break from the cloud cover and pictured below is our last glimpse of blue sky for the day.

Despite the grey weather and limited visibility, we could see the beauty in the land around us.

After spending a day recovering from the long hike, a short walk along the river was a relaxing way to end our time in the area.
