When my husband came home from work today we went over to see Mario. Usually we visit him after dinner but I wanted to take photos before it started to rain to post them for today's blog.
There's no name for this ice cream place, because everyone in the village just knows Mario.
He makes the best ice cream, not only does it taste delicious what's even better is that I don't have any stomach reactions when I eat it, unlike with commercial ice cream.
Mario lives about 4 blocks away from us in a residential neighborhood consisting of apartment buildings and single family houses. Mario has been making and selling ice cream from his house since 1970.
Behind the screen door there's a small "kitchen" where Mario makes the ice cream in big machines. The various bins containing the ice cream are inside as well, however, nobody goes inside, you order from the window.
One scoop of ice cream is one Euro. This sign describes various sundaes which have multiple scoops, toppings and whipping cream for five Euros. My husband had "spaghetti ice cream" which is vanilla ice cream run though a special device which makes it to look like "noodles" which is then covered with strawberry sauce and coconut sprinkles. He started eating it before I had a chance to capture it.
I love everything about Mario's: the fact that he really enjoys making and selling ice cream (and it is delicious ice cream) as well as the typical Italian low-key atmosphere. When you sit at one of the tables, you feel like you're at somebody's house not at a "shop" - and that feeling just doesn't exist anywhere else that I know of.
One of his customers gave him the cap, which he wears proudly.
