The magic of an optical illusion

The magic of an optical illusion

Magic is all about optical illusions: making objects appear or disappear ... as if by "magic". This is usually accomplished with mirrors. "Now you see it...now you don't..."

Do you see a small child in photo #1? Do you see it better now in photo #2?

Depending on the angle with which you view the art installation, the mirrored cut-out of the person either becomes invisible or visible.

The Mirror of History art sculpture by artist Matthias Braun was installed in January 2013 in Schwetzingen, Germany.

The art installation was dedicated to the remembrance of all the people who disappeared during the National Socialism (Nazi) reign in Germany.

The figures stand where the Jewish family Levi used to live.

Translation: "We remember and mourn the victims and urge everyone to respect democracy, human rights and human dignity for the coming generations"

Important final note: I thought the optical illusion was well depicted with the mirrored cut-out figures. However, in no way do I mean to equate the entertainment factor of "magic" with the tragedy of the holocaust.

Thanks Lynn - also for letting me know whether there was an optical illusion for you. Having taken the photos I couldn't judge how others may / may not see it

Thank you Peter. Schwetzingen is not too far from Heidelberg about 20 minutes. Depending on how much time you plan to spend near Heidelberg, you might want to include it in your plans.
