Only in USA is it "Thanksgiving Day" today. Here in Europe it's like any other Thursday, a normal working day. I'm posting this little bird family which has some nice fall color tones for today's topic.
The birds are made from gourds (or squash). First the gourds are dried, then carved, etched and burned to create the patterns and faces of the creatures. I bought them in 2002 while hiking the famous Inca Trail in Peru to Macchu Pichu over five days. Passing through small villages in the valleys along the way, the street vendors would come up to us tourists selling trinkets. I was happy to support these very poor families and their artwork was a perfect souvenir for me to remember my journey. These little birds were small and lightweight fitting into my backpack and robust not only to survive the hike but also the trip from South America back to Europe.
To all Americans on Photoblog: Happy Thanksgiving!!
