The specialty drink this time of year in Germany is Glühwein which is called hot mulled wine in English.
It's served at all holiday parties and at all of the Christmas Markets. The basic recipe is: one or more bottles of strong red wine plus cinnamon sticks, cloves, star-shaped anise, honey or sugar and orange slices. Some people add further spices like cardamom or all spice. You heat the wine (do not allow it to boil) for 1-2 hours and remove the spices before serving.
The recent trend is to heat up the Glühwein on the grill and with this mild weather, I suppose more people will be cooking out this Christmas than ever before.
By the way, it is almost impossible for a native German speaker to pronounce the English word "squirrel". And if you ask them to say "squirrel" while drinking Glühwein the result is pretty hilarious - guaranteed for a good laugh!
