Two of my usual preoccupations…. This is the record I'm listening to 24/7 these days: a cd of two of John Adams' contemporary orchestral pieces: “Doctor Atomic Symphony” and “Guide to Strange Places.” “Doctor Atomic” is a symphonic version of some of the themes from his amazing opera of that name, and “Guide” is a mesmerizing collection of musical snippets that weave among each other and transition into each other; in it I hear bits of Stravinsky's “Rite of Spring” colliding with and working alongside the whimsical bits of “West Side Story,” if you can imagine that. The liner notes are quite wonderful too - I got a lot more out of “Guide to Strange Places” after reading them. OK, so another co-worker wanted to feed me today!! They are wonderful, aren't they? To paraphrase “Ghostbusters,” when someone comes into your office and asks “Do you want some homemade idlees and coconut chutney,” say YES!
