It's always nice to visit a different city and what better time than for a birthday. This year, for my birthday in January 2020, we decided to take the Eurostar from London to Paris, cross Paris by Metro from Gare du Nord to Gare du Lyon, then take the TGV to Aix-en-Provence, a small town in the south of France. The journey took us all day, but the train is a pleasant way to travel.
Arriving in Aix in the early evening we decided to take a taxi to our hotel. The Aix TGV station is 10 miles out of town. There is a bus, but it wasn't obvious to us where to get it so at that time of night, tired after an early morning start, we just wanted to get to our hotel.
Our hotel was 15 minutes walk from the centre of Aix and for the next 3 days we wandered around this small city visiting the Saturday Market, the museums and art galleries and enjoying the food and drink. We both love taking photos and people watching from the pavement cafes and walking through the narrow streets was a delight.
Aix was the home of the painter Cezanne and his house and studio is normally open to visitors. Unfortunately, its always closed in January and this year also in Feb for some renovations. But there is a Cezanne trail which can be followed from a map and signs in the pavements.
