They're Tearing Down the Mountains

by Marsha July. 06, 2009 4211 views

Following my last post of old ruins of gold mining operations in Teller County is this one of the current mining that??s being done. This is surface mining and to me it causes great destruction and scars on the land that will take eons to heal. On their side, they claim that protecting the environment is a high priority for their company. If you're interested in reading more about it here's their website: http://www.ccvgoldmining.com/ [ccvgoldmining.com]

Next two shots contain elements of both the old and new mining operations.

Enormous tire from one of the monster trucks.

Old mining structures in the foreground and modern mining company's “reclaimed” land in the background.

Magnífico trabajo de denuncia... Es una tristeza que un paisaje tan maravilloso se vea así transformado... Felicitaciones por hacernos participar!

Coal mining is doing the same in Appalachia and other parts of the U.S. Land can be 'reclaimed,' but a pile of unconsolidated rock and dirt is not the same as a natural set of formations - including water-bearing sandstones and limestones capped by impervious shales. The layer cake has been destroyed. Placing new 'frosting' on top only fools the eye.

Although this is a beautiful and impressive set, it hurst my heart to see these scares in such beautiful landscapes. Why we persist to saw the branch on which we are all sitting?

I don't know much about the validity of them 'protecting the environment' here with all these big diesel machines, but I do know that the first and last shots show some beautiful landscapes. What will we do if they bulldoze all of that away? This is why it is so important to take lots and lots of photos.
