Ever Milked a Goat?

Check out my daughter's humorous and informative blog post of
our visit to the Goat Cheese Lady right here: Crunchy Betty [crunchybetty.com]

Lindsey posted an account on her blog, too: The Goat Cheese Lady [thegoatcheeselady.wordpress.com]

Note to friends:
Arrived in Kansas yesterday for a two-week visit….will check in here at PB when I have time!

Have you ever milked a goat?

Well, for those of you who answered, “No,” I hadn't either until last Wednesday. Went along as photographer with my daughter, Leslie, who was interviewing “The Goat Cheese Lady,” for her blog. It was great fun!

Never having been around goats much, I learned something about them and had hands-on experience with not only milking, but also using that milk to make fresh cheese!

Here's Lindsey, the Goat Cheese Lady, herself! She teaches classes on weekends to people who wish to learn about goats and the cheese-making process. She's explaining to us the finer points of squishing milk out of a goat!

This is Big Boss Mama, the goat that rules the rest, and the first to get milked.
The goats get to nibble while on the stand being milked….and watched by the chickens!

Mmmm….fresh, wholesome goat milk! I tasted some of it
when we got back to the kitchen. It was delicious!

“Did I do THAT?”

This little guy is the only male in the group. As I was shooting in the goat pen he decided it would be fun to “terrorize” me by incessantly head-butting, jumping up on me, and tugging at my jeans and shoelaces with his teeth. Well, that is, until Big Boss Mama noticed his antics. She planted herself immediately next to me and gave him a very sharp head-butt every time
he came near me. Haha….Big Boss Mama goat had my back….it was awesome!

Part of the process of turning milk into cheese….

Wheat bread just of of the oven, homemade plum jam, and fresh goat cheese….YUM!!!

Lindsey and my daughter, Leslie, on the right holding the farm-fresh items
being sent home compliments of the goats and chickens! Poor cone-head
doggy just had an operation that boy pups often have to get….

We were raised on goat milk. Our goat gave a half gallon twice a day. Goats are my favorite!!!!! I've always thought they were the cutest :)

I was visiting goats at a friend's farm and was terrorized by a rooster also! They can be mean little ba$*ards!
What a great set this is. I especially like the third....and your narrative...and your lovely daughter's name!

These are all incredible Marsha! I love the goat and the rooster looking at each other. Fantastic. Love 6. Just perfect.
Maybe I should consider raising goats for cheese. Look at her apron with the holey jeans. I would never again have to face the, "what am I going to wear to work??" ordeal.

This is a fascinating process and progressive set of photos! I just love #3 and that sweet face in #6! (We send goats to our World Vision kids in Kenya each Christmas, because they get milk, meat, and new babies to sell/trade. Goats are a real boon to their little community's economy!) This was a very cool post, Marsha!

I never milked a goat, but I love the cheese, it is delicious and if you will come to Portugal one day, you have to ask for "Serra de Estrela cheese". You won't be sorry!! Lovely and funny pictures!
