#5 - Go for the Gold!

I won't be shooting the power plant although I'd love to. It was abandoned after a flood in 1965 is now virtually inaccessible unless you scramble down through the stream and over huge boulders for five miles. Getting out of this wilderness area is even way more challenging - hikers have left tents, backpacks and other gear behind because they found it impossible to carry back up.

>>>Go HERE [gazette.com] to learn the absolutely fascinating history of the dam and power plant.

If you head out of the small gold-mining town of Victor, Colorado, travel up Phantom Canyon Road a few miles, then left turn onto a bumpy, winding county dirt road, you will soon reach lovely and peaceful Skaguay Reservoir, a favorite spot for local fisherman. However, hidden behind the serenity of the place is an intriguing story, rich in historical events.

Skaguay Dam, the first steel-reinforced, rock faced dam in the world began in 1899. A wooden pipeline transported water from the reservoir five miles down the canyon to the hydroelectric plant first built to supply power to the gold mines and surrounding towns.

Looking at the view across the reservoir and opposite the dam.

Shot this standing on the ground at the far right side of the dam looking up.

Well, I thought #1 was pretty great until I got to #2! What a stunner, Girl!! (Where's your sense of adventure - or did you decide that "sense" was a better option for the power plant hike?)
