Bread-baking day in the Alps

This bakehouse is located in a very small Rhaeto-romansch village, Sogn Benedetg /Soin Benedetch/, in Graubünden, Switzerland. Romansch is still spoken here and the few families that live there still bake their breads in the centuries-old communty bakehouse on the only road that passes through. It was a priviledge to take part.

First, the oven is heated by the coals.

The dough rises.

The village bakers (Family members who join in the bi-monthly bake.)

The bread is baked

The view out the bakery door in Sogn Benedetg while waiting for the bread.
