Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen

by Jay March. 06, 2011 3550 views

The castle of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (no easier to say than to write) in southern Germany is the ancestral home to a number of Princes and Kings related to a number of royal familes from Portugal and Romania all the way to Sweden, not to mention several noble and royal houses within Germany itself.

It is still in private hands although the Fürst (Prince) does not reside there any longer. It is open to the public and most interesting. It belongs to the Prince's foundation and is used by the family only at Christmas.

It sits high over the Danube above the town of Sigmaringen, which was the seat of the once self-governing principality of the same long name until only 90 years ago. Today it is a part of the state of Baden-Württemberg not far from the Swiss border.

If enlarged, it gets bigger – (I don't know why, but I think that's funny.)

(Ditto)
