Hohentwiel (Singen)

by Jay May. 17, 2012 5751 views

Located in southern Baden-Württemberg, Germany, not far from the Swiss border, this ancient castle ruin is the largest such ruin in the entire Federal Republic of Germany.

It was a good hike from Singen up to the castle-fortress (Berg), and the views were marvelous. You can see those views from my post two days ago: Views from Hohentwiel [photoblog.com]

In the far left distance, the Bodensee (Lake of Constance) can be seen. It is bordered by Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Into the Light! — Up from the Keep (I prefer to think of it as the dungeon ;-)

What it used to look like before they started to dismantle the castle almost 200 years ago. It was a way of “demilitarizing” in those days. Bricks and stones were sold or used for village construction down below or elsewhere.

A wonderful trip to the past. I like to see the old walls surrounded by new grass and flowers, a testimony that the world is always the same, only the human constructions, even strong and almost invincible is ephemeral.

I'm ENVIOUS!! What an incredible place...you got some great shots, are you loving the camera?? I tried going in to a dungeon once in England... the most CREEPY feeling overcame me and I totally freaked out and had to fight my way backwards in a very tight space filled with people... just couldn't get out of there soon enough!!

Impressive castle. It had to be a terrible fortress. Great job

Ruined or not, I am particularly impressed with stone work. # 7 shows craftsmanship that would be difficult to find being done today to say the least. Great set!
